Mike Askew
Mike taught in London primary schools and has written
mathematics education
materials for various publishers. He is a professor
at King’s College
London, where he supervises PhD candidates, researches
and writes. His research work has included commissions
from the Teacher
Training Agency, Nuffield, and the Leverhulme Trust.
Mike is now also a
Director of BEAM and closely involved in BEAM's product
development,
professional development and research initiatives.

Carole Bean
Carole has worked in mathematics education for twenty
years as an advisory teacher and numeracy consultant
for the National Numeracy Strategy. Her work involves
in-service training, including working alongside teachers
in the classroom. She has worked with teachers and early
years practitioners in many parts of this country and
abroad and is now a freelance mathematics consultant.

Jeannie Billington
Jeannie has worked in primary mathematics at many different
levels: as a coordinator, advisory teacher, headteacher,
external examiner and senior lecturer. She now works
independently and provides in-service training for teachers,
organises workshops and summer schools and teaches on
CLPE’s teaching assistants courses and the Southwark
Family Numeracy Project. Her publications include articles
and books written for teachers, parents and children.

Janine Blinko
Janine has been an advisory teacher for mathematics
and a senior lecturer at Anglia Polytechnic University.
She is now a freelance mathematics consultant and writer.
Janine is on the writing team for National Tests at
Key Stage 1; she has recently completed a research project
on conceptual assessment questions at Key Stage 2 for
QCA and is involved in training for the National Numeracy
Strategy.

Pauline Braviner
Pauline is an experienced primary teacher and mathematics
coordinator. She has worked as a lecturer in further
education and been involved in basic skills work with
adults. Pauline is currently a full-time numeracy consultant,
providing classroom support for teachers and teaching
assistants in schools across the primary age range and
delivering in-service training courses.

Keith Brentnall
Keith is an experienced primary teacher who has taught
across the primary age range in Surrey and Hampshire.
He has been a mathematics coordinator, deputy head and
head teacher and is currently a senior lecturer in primary
mathematics at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham
teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Peter Clarke
Peter has been a mathematics coordinator and deputy
headteacher in primary schools in Australia and London.
He also worked as a mathematics advisor for Barking
and Dagenham LEA on the ‘Improving Primary Mathematics’
initiative. Peter has written materials for BEAM and
other publishers and is also series editor of a primary
mathematics scheme. He also runs in-service training
at schools and conferences.

Matthew Copping
Matthew is the headteacher of a Primary school in
Shropshire. As a Head of
a small school he still maintains a substantial teaching
commitment. Prior
to his current post he was a Local Authority Numeracy
Consultant for three
and a half years. He has also held teaching posts
in London and Cheshire.

Sheila Ebbutt
Sheila Ebbutt is the Managing Director of BEAM Education.
She worked as a primary mathematics advisory teacher
in Inner London for ten years and spent time developing
mathematics books and materials for teachers there.
Sheila was appointed to BEAM in 1990 and directs all
aspects of BEAM's activities, including writing, running
courses, offering a range of consultancy and publishing
teaching materials. She has written and contributed
to many mathematics education publications for various
publishers. She is a coordinator of the Early Childhood
Mathematics Group.

Ian Farquhar
Ian is a former head of mathematics, county advisor
for mathematics, and numeracy consultant. He has been
involved in primary education for many years. Before
becoming a freelance consultant, he was a tutor for
the Open University and helped to develop mathematics
teaching in several LEAs. Although he is
an OFSTED inspector, he much prefers to help schools
develop their staff and curriculum.

Hilary Faust
Hilary is an experienced consultant who has been an
early years advisory teacher, deputy head of a large,
combined nursery centre and part of the Haringey mathematics
team. She has also worked at Goldsmiths College and
the University of North London and currently runs courses
for early years practitioners at the Institute of Education,
London, and for schools, nurseries and local authorities.

Sara Fielder
Sara has been a primary school teacher, working in mainstream
classes with high numbers of children with special needs.
Until recently she was a National Numeracy Strategy
consultant. She has trained as a Primary CAME tutor
and as a teacher/trainer to work with gifted and talented
pupils. She has written for Heinemann, PCET and Cambridge
University Press.

Gillian Foote
Gillian is an experienced primary teacher. She is
currently employed with
Reading LA as a part-time maths consultant and is
studying for an M.Ed, as
well as undertaking freelance work. Gillian has a
particular interest in the
development of young children's mathematical understanding,
and the
application of this in practical and purposeful problem
solving.

Gail Gibbins
Gail is an experienced class teacher and has been a
headteacher and mathematics advisory teacher. She has
run courses for teachers and teaching assistants, and
worked closely with mathematics advisors all over the
country. She is now an independent consultant, focusing
on the implementation of the National Numeracy Strategy
and the Early Learning Goals.

Liz Gibbs
Liz is an experienced classroom primary and early years teacher. She has worked
across the whole primary phase as a classroom teacher and more recently as a
Numeracy Consultant. Within the past year Liz has worked for the National Strategy
as a National Whilteboard Director and ICT Regional Adviser. She now divides
her time between Local Authority work as a Primary Strategy Consultant and independent
work.

Sue Gifford
An experienced primary teacher, Sue now lectures at
Roehampton University. Her latest book is Teaching
Mathematics 3-5: developing learning in the Foundation
Stage, published by Open University Press. Her
interests include children's recording and early years
mathematics. She is also currently researching children
with mathematical learning difficulties and dyscalculia.

Michael Hall
Michael has been a head of mathematics, an advisory
teacher at primary and secondary level, a lecturer on
the PGCE course at King’s College London and a
tutor on the BEd and MSc courses at South Bank University,
London. Michael currently delivers National Numeracy
Strategy training as a consultant for Key Stages 1,
2 and 3, as well as being an associate lecturer for
the Open University.

Anne Henderson
Anne has many years’ experience of teaching mathematics
across all age ranges and has been a special needs mathematics
coordinator. As well as an extensive and practical knowledge
of the National Numeracy Strategy, Anne has particular
expertise in special needs. She has written three books
on dyslexia and mathematics and has lectured across
the UK and internationally on both dyslexia and special
needs in mathematics.

Denyse Irwin
Denyse has experience of working in Foundation Stage,
Key Stage 1, 2 and 3.
She has taught children with a range of additional
educational needs and has
produced guidance on how to support different groups
in the classroom.
Denyse has developed resources in assessment for
learning and target
setting. Denyse is a lead consultant assessor for
the Basic Skills Agency
and works as a Primary Strategy Consultant for a
Local Authority in addition
to her freelance work.

Andrew Jeffrey
Andrew is a self-confessed ’maths evangelist’
and an experienced teacher-trainer. He is deputy head
at a school in Brighton and is an Independent Schools’
Inspector. Andrew has run mathematics and ICT departments,
working with gifted pupils as well as those with special
needs. He specialises in improving the confidence of
both children and teachers in mathematics, and in promoting
an enjoyment of the subject. Andrew is also a professional
magician.

Janet Kelly
Janet is a freelance mathematics consultant. She has
worked in mathematics education for many years as an
advisory teacher and advisor for Humberside and the
East Riding of Yorkshire. Janet is interested in working
with gifted and talented pupils and pupils with special
educational eeds. She has published materials and books
for mathematics in the Foundation Stage through to Key
Stage 2.

Jon Kurta
Following fourteen years teaching in London and abroad
and nine years in higher education, Jon has recently
taken up a post as a numeracy consultant. He has written
a range of activity books and materials for BEAM, Scholastic
and the Numeracy Focus scheme. He has a particular interest
in ICT and mathematics.

Lynda Maple
Lynda is a freelance consultant and has worked on major
curriculum development projects – including setting
up BEAM in 1987. She co-wrote BEAM’s Preparing
for a Mathematics Inspection. Lynda has been a consultant
for the National Numeracy Project and is the numeracy
project leader in North Islington Education Action Zone.
Lynda is currently leading a project on the use of whiteboards
to support whole-class interactive teaching and learning.

Liz Meenan
Liz has been a maths advisory teacher, head of department,
class teacher and more recently the Maths Education
Officer for 4Learning – the education arm of Channel
4. She has helped produce a range of multimedia resources
for both primary and secondary mathematics. She is now
a freelance mathematics consultant working with a range
of providers.

Jean Millar
Jean coordinates Family Numeracy in Camden, supports
early years practitioners in the classroom and also
works as a freelance numeracy consultant. She has been
a mathematics coordinator and an acting deputy headteacher.
She has lectured in adult numeracy, been an advisory
teacher for NQTs and taught on the DfES mathematics
course at King’s College London.

Fran Mosley
Fran has taught in London primary schools and wrote
and edited mathematics materials for the Inner London
Education Authority publishing house. She has worked
for BEAM since its early years and has helped develop
its innovative approach to mathematics provision. Her
particular interests are in maths games and making mathematics
accessible to all children.

Chris Olley
Chris is an experienced classroom teacher and head of
department. He is currently working as a consultant
designing and writing internet teaching sites for the
BBC and managing Number Partners: a business volunteer
scheme supporting numeracy in primary schools. He also
provides in-service training on numeracy issues and
training in ICT and mathematics. Chris taught on the
secondary mathematics PGCE course at Goldsmiths College,
London and has trained teachers abroad.

Adrian Pinel
Adrian is an experienced teacher, advisor and lecturer
at primary, secondary and higher education levels. He
currently lectures in mathematics and mathematics education
at University College Chichester. He has written a range
of books including some for the ATM and BEAM, as well
as many magazine articles. He is the inventor of ‘Loop
cards’ and the originator and designer of ATM
Mathematical Activity Tiles.

Jeni Pinel
Jeni is an independent educational consultant, researcher
and publisher. She lectures in primary mathematics and
childhood studies at University College Chichester.
Previously, Jeni was a maths advisory teacher, an LEA
coordinator of the PrIME Project, a deputy headteacher
and, more recently, led two maths curriculum development
projects with groups of schools. She has written a number
of books and articles.

Gill Potter
Gill is an experienced classroom practitioner and deputy
headteacher, now working as an independent consultant.
As well as lecturing at Oxford Brookes University she
is a qualified IT instructor and accredited trainer.
As part of her MA, she focused on using thinking skills
to develop a common language for discussing learning
in mathematics, and has recently trained
as a Primary CAME tutor.

Janet is a freelance consultant, with a particular interest
in the early years and special needs. She works in schools
and delivers in-service training across the UK and beyond.
She has been a headteacher and an advisory teacher for
mathematics, as well as lecturing adults in mathematics
education. Janet has written books and games for teachers

Carole Skinner
Carole is an experienced primary and Early Years teacher.
She has been a mathematics advisory teacher and education
lecturer at Brunel University and is a member of the
Early Childhood Mathematics Group. Carole taught children
who have English as an additional language and developed
mathematical materials for this group. She has also
written for a range of publishers and organisations
including BBC Worldwide, Rigby, Early Education and
the Basic Skills Agency. She now leads the BEAM product
development team.

Les Staves
Prior to becoming a consultant, Les was headteacher
of a special school. Since then he has worked in special
schools across the country and has written special needs
materials and provided training for the National Numeracy
Strategy. His training sessions relate to mathematics
for very special pupils and his book Mathematics for
Children with Severe or Profound Learning Difficulties
has been very well received.

Stef Sullivan
Having taught mathematics throughout all Key Stages,
Stef has spent the last eight years providing in-service
training for state and independent schools in the UK
and abroad. She has written a series of books for KS2
aimed at encouraging pupils to talk about mathematical
ideas as well as being a contributing author to a variety
of publications for Read Education and OUP. Stef currently
works part time at Nottingham University as a tutor
on the Mathematics PGCE course.

Ian Thompson
Ian Thompson has taught children, trainees, teachers
and numeracy consultants. He has edited three books
for Open University Press, and written many articles
for the Times Educational Supplement and a range of
professional and academic journals on children’s
calculation methods. He was seconded to the National
Numeracy Strategy for two years, and in 2003 became
Visiting Professor at the University of Northumbria.

Margaret Travers
Margaret is an early year’s teacher, and also
holds a Montessori teaching
diploma, her experience spans over 23 years. Margaret
has a depth of knowledge about the development of early
mathematics through interesting
sensory resources and practical activities. Margaret
has owned and managed a
nursery school, and has worked as Head of Early Years
in a primary school.
She is also an experienced OFSTED inspector. Margaret
specialised in
creative learning for an MA in Early Years at Sheffield
University and now
works as a freelance early year’s advisor and
trainer.

Helen Williams
Helen is a freelance education consultant who has worked as a mathematics advisory
teacher and been involved in initial teacher training, QCA, and DfES consultation
groups. She is a member of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and edits
their journal Mathematics Teaching. Currently Helen teaches, writes and reviews
mathematics materials, leads in-service training courses and contributes to conferences.
