Working together
Communities of learners in primary mathematics

How can I encourage children to work
together more effectively?

How can we develop mathematics
teaching and learning across the school?

What sort of classroom and school
communities are best for learning?

Find the answers at the BEAM 2008 conference!

The BEAM conference is a great opportunity to explore the classroom communities
we need to foster to encourage effective learning, particularly through productive group work in mathematics. Drawing on research and their extensive experience, Mike Askew and Lynne McClure will explore ways of working that are shown to engage learners and raise standards.

They will also look at how good practice in mathematics education can have an impact beyond the mathematics classroom and help children become both effective learners and community builders.

The conferences will be held in the following venues:

London - Friday 13 June 2008

King’s College, Strand, London, WC2

Manchester - Friday 20 June 2008
Bridgewater Hall, Lower Mosley Street, Manchester, M2 3WS

Bristol - Friday 27 June 2008
Holland House Hotel, Redcliffe Way, Bristol,
BS1 6SQ

Our keynote speakers are Mike Askew and Lynne McClure:

Mike Askew
Mike taught in primary schools before moving into teacher education and research. Mike is a director of BEAM and closely involved in BEAM’s publishing and professional development. He is professor of mathematics education at King’s College, London and has written extensively on primary mathematics. Mike has worked with teachers, consultants and policy makers around the world.

Lynne McClure

She runs the postgraduate primary mathematics course at Edinburgh University and works with the NRICH project in Cambridge. An author of many articles and books, Lynne’s public appearances include the Royal Institution and Teachers TV.
