Studying for a Postgraduate
Certificate in Professional Learning (Mathematics Education)
will provide you with the academic, professional and
personal skills to enhance learning in your classroom.
You will carry out action research and reflect on your
practice. You will be able to provide children with
enjoyable, interesting and challenging maths to help
your colleagues to do the same.
It is a Masters-level programme, taught at Roehampton
University in conjunction with BEAM. We are currently
finalising our 2008-9 brochure, You can download
a brochure here.
Our approach
Our emphasis is on fostering collaborative
enquiry through talk. We will consider approaches that
seek to empower children through:
- talking and thinking
in groups
- visualising models and images
- recording in their own
way
- spotting patterns and testing theories
- taking risks in a safe environment
You will get an opportunity to try out and evaluate
these approaches in your classroom. Working in
pairs with a fellow student you plan your action
research and consider results. You are given a
recommended reading list, and are encouraged to
keep a reflective journal to record your findings
and thoughts.
Why choose this programme?
The programme is written and delivered
by mathematics education specialists at BEAM
and Roehampton University. Both of these organisations
provide high-quality professional development
in mathematics education.
Opt for a selection of four BEAM courses as part
of your programme, according to your own interests.
In our brochure we recommend some course bundles
focused on topics such as problem solving, number
and calculation, innovative approaches to maths,
and maths in the Foundation Stage.
We want you to translate your research findings
into good practice in your school or LA. Carry
out your school-based enquiry, decide on next
actions back in school, then go ahead and implement
it.
You can further your study and work towards a
Diploma or the MA Education at Roehampton University.
Schools and LAs often take into account ongoing
professional development in considering promotions.
As a student of Roehampton University, you benefit
from full access to the University library and
other campus facilities.
