A course for Early Years practitioners
and mathematics subject leaders
It can be challenging to provide effective activities
that help children
develop their mental calculating skills in Early Years
settings. We must
provide activities that use appropriate models and language
and that
encourage different levels and ways of working. These
activities need to
be combined with an understanding of the ways that children
begin to calculate and develop their number sense.
On this course you will:
- identify key aspects of
early calculation
- consider the implications from
research about how children
start to calculate
- explore a range of approaches
to engage children in problem
solving and discussion
- develop games, activities
and provision to foster confidence,
curiosity and exploration
