There are a number of ‘hot topics’ in maths education at the moment, so we have developed several off-the-peg packages to address them. Here are a couple of examples.
Every lesson a problem-solving lesson
Get a fresh, focused take on using and applying maths. Through INSET days and in-class support, we work with the head, teachers and TAs to help you adopt a problem-solving approach for all of your maths.
What’s involved?
This PD package includes:
- turning activities into problem-solving opportunities
- the effective use of questioning
- strategies to promote speaking and listening in the classroom
- the role of concrete apparatus in supporting problem solving
How does it work?
Typically, this programme begins with a whole-school INSET. Then we run eight days across two terms, each including planning, team teaching and review. We also provide TA training and twilight staff meetings. The maths subject leader is released to attend the support sessions for all year groups and to help embed good practice throughout the school. The number of days, content and timing can be adapted to suit you.
Developing consistency in calculation
Are different strategies in different year groups confusing some learners? You can make a real impact on children’s learning by working with us to develop a consistent whole-school approach to calculation.
What’s involved?
This PD package includes:
- reviewing progression in calculation across the school
- practical approaches to teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- the use of resources, models and images to support children’s learning
- children’s misconceptions and how to tackle them
- producing a whole-school calculation policy
How does it work?
Usually spanning five in-school days, we run a mix of INSET sessions for teachers and TAs, focused support in each year group, twilight staff meetings and parents’ evenings. We also support your maths subject leader in producing a calculation policy. The precise number of days, content and timing is flexible. |
