Objectives:

  • To explore problem solving for young children
  • To explore how young children develop their sense of number
  • To consider effective observation, assessment and planning

By the end of the course, delegates will be familiar with:

  • Explore how to effectively support and extend children’s mathematical problem solving opportunities and skills during everyday play, routines and adult-shared activities
  • Encourage children to develop thinking skills through sustained shared talk and effective adult interaction
  • Explore how resources and the enabling environment can be used to the greatest advantage to really extend and develop mathematical learning
  • Identify the potential for developing all aspects of mathematics including problem solving, reasoning, calculation and shape, space and measure through active interesting play
  • Use stories, songs, games and outdoor activities to make mathematics memorable and meaningful for young children
  • Explore number opportunities through creativity, role play and inexpensive fun and natural resources
  • Planning for maths, auditing current maths provision and finding ways to extend opportunities, observing and assessing within EYFS framework
