A course for Early Years practitioners
and mathematics subject leaders
Young children learn as they play, without knowing that
they are developing
their mathematical understanding. Practitioners must
recognise when children
engage with mathematical ideas, and assess what knowledge
and skills children
are applying to their activity. We need to know what
activities will stimulate
children’s mathematical thinking, and how and when
to talk with children
sensitively and appropriately. The Early Years Foundation
Stage Curriculum
is a good starting point from which to plan.
On this course you will:
- identify the potential for mathematical learning
in everyday
personal, social and emotional activities
- explore
how stories, songs, games and outdoor activities
can
make maths more memorable and meaningful for children
- explore mathematics through art and creativity
- identify ways of stimulating children’s
minds by providing fantasy and role play both inside
and outdoors
- identify ways of learning mathematics
through physical play
- consider effective observation
and planning
