A course for Reception to Year 3
teachers and mathematics subject leaders
We need to provide young children with a range of practical
experiences and visual models to help them develop an
understanding of cardinal and ordinal number. Beadstrings,
number tracks and number lines are all important in supporting
a structured progression in children’s learning
from Reception to Year 3, leading
eventually to the use of the empty number line as a standard
mental model.
On this course you will:
- use counting frames, beadstrings,
number tracks and number lines
in a range of practical activities
- identify useful
approaches to the teaching of addition and subtraction
- explore activities and resources to support the
development and use
of number facts
- find out about the research and
educational practice in
the Netherlands
- consider the importance of consistent
mental strategies and
written methods throughout the primary phase
