Supporting multilingual children’s learning in mathematics at
Key Stages 1 and 2

A course for Key Stage 1 & 2 teachers and mathematics subject leaders

Some bilingual and multilingual children have good mathematical ability that can be masked by their lack of fluency with the English language. Some children can find it a struggle to acquire both mathematical and English language fluency. As language is central to the acquisition of mathematical concepts, there are significant challenges in catering effectively for these children in the mathematics classroom.

On this course you will:

  • reflect on relevant and recent research regarding language acquisition and mathematics
  • consider the provision of extra support through adapting, consolidating and/or expanding appropriate activities
  • assess linguistic as well as cognitive demands of a task
  • explore activities that allow children to draw on their own cultural experience
  • socially construct activities so that children can learn through talking in mixed multilingual groups

London: Wed 23 Jan 2008 (LON22)
